Music Video Review: Sycklone has eyes for the throne on ‘Label Me King’

On the ‘Label Me King’ music video, Sycklone heads to NYC – the cornerstone of hip-hop – to stake his claim as a contemporary ruler of the genre

For those who don’t know his name, Sycklone is introducing himself in a big way. Hailing from Everett, Massachusetts, the 29-year-old songwriter has become a one-to-watch artist with a significant buzz thanks to his dynamic approach to hip-hop. Having released two albums to date – the ambitious Self Made and its follow-up On A Wave – Sycklone has received significant attention in the last 12 months for his Green Files project, a series of songs, videos, and concepts conceived during lockdown.

Released in the summer of 2022, the music video for his single ‘Label Me King’ is all about Sycklone staking a claim on his chosen genre. Sleek direction is the game’s name here, with Sycklone and his team making a case for how music videos don’t necessarily need big budgets to put across solid ideas and compelling visuals.

In the video, Sycklone spits bars in several symbolically essential parts of New York City, including the cultural nucleus of Time Square and rap music’s ancestral home of Brooklyn. The rapper’s energy is infectious on the track; we can’t look away as he takes center stage, commands the camera, and delivers his verses.

In the 12 months following the music video’s release, Sycklone has only become more successful and accrued thousands more fans, meaning that the idea of labeling him ‘king’ isn’t just wishful thinking…
